The Last Stand of Janaan Luwuum
The much-anticipated film, The Last Stand of Janaan Luwuum, sheds light on the life and legacy of the former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Janaan Luwuum.
The film chronicles his life and the events leading to his assassination during the regime of Idi Amin Dada, a pivotal moment in Uganda’s history.
A Story That Resonates Globally
Directed and led by Nampijja Catherine, the project aims to revive the memory of Archbishop Luwuum, whose story is known internationally but, according to Nampijja, has not received adequate recognition in Uganda.
Speaking at the media presentation in Masengere, Nampijja expressed her inspiration for the film, which began in 2019 after hearing accounts of Luwuum’s impact from individuals across Europe.
“Janaan Luwuum’s story touched many people worldwide, but in Uganda, he is remembered very little,” Nampijja remarked. She emphasized the importance of documenting African history to counter misconceptions and ensure future generations understand the sacrifices made by leaders like Luwuum.
Lessons for the Young and Old
Rev. Dan Kajumba, one of the lead actors in the film, highlighted its broad appeal and the powerful lessons it offers. “The film is made on an international scale, and it holds many lessons for both the young and the old,” Rev. Kajumba said. The movie not only tells a story of courage and sacrifice but also aims to inspire a sense of justice and leadership.
